Can You See It Yet? Visibility Distances for Advance Signs

When placing advance signs, it is important that they are the correct minimum distances as set out in the Safety Code of Practice (see Table Below). Especially the “visibility distance”. This is the distance a driver must have in advance of a sign which not to be confused with the distances of signs from site which is referred to as “D” in the code.

If your site does not permit the required visibility distances due to things such as bends, junctions or other issues you should consider adding additional signage such as doubling up on your Road Works Ahead to ensure that drivers can clearly see the advance signage before they interact with the site. Alternatively if you have to increase the distance from site by a small amount to achieve the visibility distance or it cannot actually be achieved as set out I the code make sure you site specific risk assessment details the reasons and the mitigations you have taken.
